🚩 Marshal Training Update

With Rally Scotland coinciding with peak haggis breeding season, marshals are reminded to remain vigilant for unexpected cross-stage movements. We are currently developing an enhanced training module for all marshals and officials.

Preparations continue ahead of Scotland returning to the World Rally Championship calendar in 2027, with SMMC contributing to a series of advanced training modules for marshals.

Haggis Awareness Training (Enhanced Module)

With Rally Scotland coinciding with peak haggis breeding season, marshals are reminded to remain vigilant for unexpected cross-stage movements. We are currently developing an enhanced module which will cover:

  • Identification of left-running and right-running haggis in their natural habitat, including recognising early warning signs such as determined hillside positioning
  • Safe marshalling distances during unexpected cross-stage migrations
  • Use of flags to politely discourage haggis from selecting apexes, braking zones, or photographer hotspots as rest areas
  • Escalation procedures if a haggis refuses to yield track position, including multi-post coordination and calm but firm negotiation
  • Coordination with neighbouring posts to confirm whether it is the same haggis, multiple haggis, or an evolving haggis situation

The module will also introduce:

  • Behavioural Awareness - Understanding seasonal patterns, including increased confidence, reduced predictability, and a tendency to appear exactly where least expected
  • Radio Reporting Protocols - Standardised terminology such as “haggis on stage”, “haggis clear”, and “possible returning haggis” to ensure clarity across the network

For awareness, the Haggis Protection Alliance has raised concerns regarding a projected increase in incidents relating to young haggis at such a critical time in their development. In response, we have agreed to introduce dedicated Haggis Counters at key spectator points, allowing accurate tracking of sightings, crossings, and near-misses throughout the event.

Further updates will follow as development continues.
