The Scottish Motorsport Marshals Club (SMMC) has recognised Andrew Main, who has stepped down as a Trustee after over fifty years of dedicated service to motorsport and to the Club.
From spectator to service
Andrew’s involvement with motorsport began in the early 1970s, when he and school friends watched events at Ingliston. The roar of unsilenced cars, so close it felt as though they could be touched, left a lasting impression and inspired him to become a marshal.
He soon moved onto the volunteer side of the barriers, marshalling at events across Scotland and beyond. In 1973, he was present at the founding of the Scottish Motorsport Marshals Club, when it was actively seeking new members.
His role developed further in 1977 when he joined the Club’s Motorsport Rescue Team. Over the years he attended hundreds of events in that capacity, and by the time he retired his Rescue licence after the Roger Albert Clark Rally in 2014, he had amassed an extraordinary 913 event attendances.
Alongside event work, Andrew also undertook the essential but often unseen task of maintaining the Club’s Rescue fleet, organising repairs, servicing and insurance to ensure our vehicles were always ready for duty.
Service and governance
Andrew joined the Board in 1991 as a director of Scottish Motorsport Marshals Club Limited, contributing to governance as well as practical operations. When the Club became a charity in 2021, he continued in the role as Trustee.
His long service was recognised with Honorary Membership of SMMC in 2023 and a Motorsport UK Long Service Recognition certificate in 2024, marking over four decades of commitment to the sport.
A special presentation at the AGM
At our Annual General Meeting on Monday evening, Andrew’s retirement as Trustee was formally marked with a presentation by Club Chair Garry Headridge - a painting of the famous 1966 Le Mans 24 Hours finish, showing the three Ford GT40s crossing the line together.
The painting recalls one of motorsport’s most iconic moments, when Ford secured a historic 1-2-3 victory that ended Ferrari’s dominance. It's a fitting tribute to Andrew’s own contribution, reflecting qualities of teamwork, determination and endurance that have defined his service to SMMC.
Members responded with warm applause in recognition of his decades of commitment and dedication.
Impact and legacy
Although he has stepped down as Trustee, Andrew remains a valued member of the Club. His influence on Scottish motorsport marshalling is deep and enduring. His record of service, governance and behind-the-scenes support has helped shape the Club for generations to come and SMMC, along with the wider motorsport community, owes him a sincere debt of gratitude.
Andrew Main receives his presentation from SMMC Committee after retiring at the 2025 AGM - a painting of the famous 1966 Le Mans 24 Hours finish, showing the three Ford GT40s crossing the line together.
