Scottish Motorsport Marshals Club (SMMC) is the only Club in Scotland that’s dedicated to all four-wheel motorsport disciplines. There are very few motorsport events held north of the border where SMMC is not playing a significant role with either our trained personnel or specialist equipment being involved.

We’re not just close to the action... we’re PART of it!

James Stronach

by SMMC Admin.

With a heavy heart, we share the sad news that James Stronach, a former member of SMMC and the Rescue Team, passed away peacefully at 5am this morning at Strathcarron Hospice, with his family by his bedside.

Many will know James through his dedicated service to Scottish motorsport, particularly with Lothian Car Club and the Doune Hillclimb. His calm leadership, commitment to safety and support for others earned him great respect across the sport.

In December, he was recognised nationally as a runner up in the Motorsport UK Volunteer of the Year Award, a fitting acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution over many years.

James will be remembered for his professionalism, warmth and encouragement to others. Our thoughts are with Jackie, Grant, Gemma, and brother Andy, and all of his family and friends at this very difficult time.

🚩 Marshal Training Update

by SMMC Admin.

Preparations continue ahead of Scotland returning to the World Rally Championship calendar in 2027, with SMMC contributing to a series of advanced training modules for marshals.

Haggis Awareness Training (Enhanced Module)

With Rally Scotland coinciding with peak haggis breeding season, marshals are reminded to remain vigilant for unexpected cross-stage movements. We are currently developing an enhanced module which will cover:

Identification of left-running and right-running haggis in their natural habitat, including recognising early warning signs such as determined hillside positioning

Safe marshalling distances during unexpected cross-stage migrations

Use of flags to politely discourage haggis from selecting apexes, braking zones, or photographer hotspots as rest areas

Escalation procedures if a haggis refuses to yield track position, including multi-post coordination and calm but firm negotiation

Coordination with neighbouring posts to confirm whether it is the same haggis, multiple haggis, or an evolving haggis situation

The module will also introduce:

Behavioural Awareness - Understanding seasonal patterns, including increased confidence, reduced predictability, and a tendency to appear exactly where least expected

Radio Reporting Protocols - Standardised terminology such as “haggis on stage”, “haggis clear”, and “possible returning haggis” to ensure clarity across the network

For awareness, the Haggis Protection Alliance has raised concerns regarding a projected increase in incidents relating to young haggis at such a critical time in their development. In response, we have agreed to introduce dedicated Haggis Counters at key spectator points, allowing accurate tracking of sightings, crossings, and near-misses throughout the event.

Further updates will follow as development continues.

John Clayton

by SMMC Admin.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Clayton, a dedicated Marshal, Radio Controller and Stage Commander who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

John was a long-standing, committed and valued member of SMMC, giving his time, energy, and expertise generously over many years. As a Radio Controller, he was a calm and dependable presence at countless events, helping to ensure that everything ran smoothly and safely. His commitment and professionalism earned him the respect and appreciation of fellow marshals, organisers, and competitors alike.

Beyond his role, John was a familiar and friendly face, always willing to lend a hand, share his knowledge, or offer encouragement to others. He represented the very best of volunteering, contributing not only through his actions but also through the camaraderie and goodwill he brought to every event.

John’s passing, so soon after his late wife Sandra, leaves a significant gap in the motorsport community.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

Sustainability in Action

by SMMC Admin.

We were delighted to achieve Motorsport UK's Sustainability Accreditation last year. Sustainability is something we are working hard to put into practice through the way we operate, maintain our equipment, and support wider communities.

Over recent months, we have been clearing out our equipment container, removing outdated or end-of-life medical and rescue kit - and rather than simply disposing of it, we have made sure it goes on to have a useful second life.

Yesterday we passed this equipment on to Scottish Emergency Rescue Association (SERA), a volunteer-led organisation supporting emergency services in countries such as Moldova, Ukraine, Romania and Serbia. Their work focuses on recycling usable fire and rescue equipment and providing professional training where it is needed most.

A wide range of surplus items, including stretchers, immobilisation equipment, tools and medical supplies, were delivered to SERA this week. While no longer suitable for our operational requirements, these resources will now be repurposed to support frontline responders overseas. The equipment is expected to be transported to Ukraine in the coming weeks, where it will contribute directly to life-saving efforts.

This reflects our commitment to reducing waste and extending the lifespan of valuable equipment wherever possible. By choosing reuse over disposal, we are lowering our environmental impact while also supporting communities facing significant challenges.

Sustainability is not all about kit and containers though. Sometimes it simply means getting stuck in.

A group of our members spent the last weekend in January volunteering with Fife Coast and Countryside Trust at Coul Den Reservoir in Glenrothes. They had a fun day building and installing duck nesting tubes, creating safe and cosy places for ducks to nest.

These tubes might look simple, but they make a real difference. By lifting nests above the water, they help protect eggs and ducklings from predators and flooding. It is hands-on, practical work, and there is something especially rewarding about seeing them in use and knowing that a small effort can have a real impact on local wildlife.

It is also a reminder that sustainability is not always about big gestures. Often, it is the smaller, practical actions that add up and make a lasting difference.

And we've promised not to share the photos of Mark Russell (Trustee and Sustainability Champion) giving it 100 percent, including an unscheduled demonstration of just how cold the water was… but if you ask nicely, we might reconsider 😉

Together, these initiatives show that sustainability at SMMC is more than a policy, it is part of what we do every day, whether that is sending vital equipment overseas or helping ducks find a safe place to call home.

Sustainability might be a long word, but at its heart it is simple, sustain what matters and have the ability to act.

If you would like to find out more about our sustainability efforts, please contact Mark (mark@smmc.org.uk).

Rally Marshals Training - 25th April, Duns

by SMMC Admin.

Ahead of the iconic Jim Clark Rally in May, the Scottish Association of Motor Sports Clubs, Scottish Motorsport Marshals Club, and the rally organisers are running a training day on Saturday 25 April in Duns.

Taking place from 9am to 4pm, the programme blends classroom learning with practical outdoor stage rally training. Open to both newcomers and experienced marshals, the day offers a great opportunity to build confidence, refine skills, and play a key role in making rallying possible.

Those new to marshalling will receive full preparation for their first rally season, while experienced volunteers can refresh and extend their knowledge in line with the latest marshalling practices and Motorsport UK guidelines. The training is completely free, with coffee and lunch provided.

You will spend the day learning from rally people, working in real-world scenarios, and gaining practical experience at the heart of motorsport.

Training sessions cover Introduction to Rally Marshalling, Closed Road Rallying, Spectator Safety and Management, and First on Scene response.

Attendance also counts towards grade maintenance or upgrade requirements for Motorsport UK licence holders on the Marshals’ Pathway, making this a fantastic chance to get involved, develop your skills, and deepen your passion for rallying.

Sign up at https://forms.gle/27MoNasFoXJxog2B9

Note: This event has been rescheduled from the originally advertised date of 18 April due to the Kielder Forest Stages Rally taking place that weekend. We are aware of the Be More Colin Super Stage Rally now taking place on 25 April, however this was the only date on which we were able to secure both a venue and trainers ahead of the Jim Clark Rally.

WRC returns to the UK... with Rally Scotland in 2027

by SMMC Admin.

Motorsport UK have today confirmed that the FIA World Rally Championship will return to the UK in 2027 with the creation of Rally Scotland, based in Aberdeen and the forests of the north-east.

Scottish Motorsport Marshals Club warmly welcomes this news! For Scotland’s marshals and volunteer officials, the return of the FIA World Rally Championship to Great Britain in 2027 with the creation of Rally Scotland, represents an exciting opportunity to be part of one of the world’s premier motorsport events. Scotland has a long tradition of hosting major rallies and providing experienced, highly respected volunteer teams who help deliver events safely and professionally.

Rally Scotland will place the spotlight firmly on the skills and commitment of the volunteer workforce that underpins the sport. From stage start and finish teams to safety crews and radio operators deep in the forests, hundreds of volunteers will play a crucial role in ensuring the event runs successfully.

SMMC believes the return of the Championship will also inspire a new generation of volunteers to get involved in the sport, while highlighting the important role that marshals play in motorsport at every level.

Garry Headridge, Chair of SMMC, said:

“The announcement of Rally Scotland is incredibly exciting for the marshal community. For many volunteers, the opportunity to be involved in a World Rally Championship event on home soil is something very special.

“Scottish marshals have built a reputation over many years for their professionalism, teamwork and passion for the sport. Events of this scale rely on a significant number of volunteers all of whom will be guaranteed a warm welcome in Scotland next year – irrelevant of the weather!

“The return of the Championship will be a proud moment for marshals across Scotland. We look forward to working with the organisers in the years ahead and to welcoming colleagues from across the UK and beyond to help deliver a world-class event in 2027.”

by Nick Clarke.

We've been asked by our friends at Coleraine and District Motor Club to highlight this opportunity to marshal on the North West 200 2026, the world class motorcycle racing event on closed public roads between Portrush, Portstewart, and Coleraine. The event is renowned for its speed, skill, and atmosphere, and it attracts top riders and tens of thousands of spectators from around the globe.

Dear Marshal,

On behalf of the Northwest 200 organising team, I am pleased to invite you to be part of the marshal team for the Northwest 200 2026, taking place from 4th to 9th May 2026.

The Northwest 200 is one of the world’s premier road racing events, and its continued success and safety rely heavily on the dedication, professionalism, and commitment of our marshals. Your experience and support would be invaluable in helping us deliver another safe and successful event for competitors, officials, and spectators alike.

Marshals play a vital role throughout race week, from practice sessions to race days, and we greatly appreciate the time, effort, and passion that each volunteer brings to the event. Full details regarding roles, schedules, briefings, and accreditation will be provided closer to the event.

If you are available and would like to join us for the 2026 North West 200, we would be delighted to welcome you back as part of the team.

Thank you for your continued support of road racing and the Northwest 200. We hope to see you on the course in May 2026.

Yours sincerely,

Cathal Cunning
