Training

The improvement of motor sport marshalling standards has been one of SMMC's main stated objectives since its inception in 1973.

From the beginning, the drive for improved marshalling standards was pursued through active on-event tutoring of novices by experienced marshalling members of SMMC.

In addition and for over 20 years SMMC has been involved in the organisation and running of formal training events for its members and other marshals.

The first two of a continuing series of major training events were held in 1984 - for rally marshals at a two-days event in the grounds of Blair Castle, Perthshire and for race marshals at Ingliston Circuit, Edinburgh. The Ingliston event was organised in conjunction with the Scottish Motor Racing Club.

Other major training events in the early years were for rally marshals in 1985, based in the Trossachs and for race marshals in 1990 at Knockhill Circuit, Fife.

Since then, race marshals training in Scotland has been organised annually in March by the Scottish Motor Racing Club, initially at Ingliston and now at Knockhill. Details of these yearly race marshals training sessions can be obtained from the SMRC website.

The present programme of training events organised by SMMC follows a now well-established pattern. Virtually every year a training event is held for one or more of the following disciplines -

  • rally marshals
  • rally radio marshals
  • speed event marshals
  • map reading
Details of future SMMC training events will be provided on this site well in advance of their dates. All marshals are welcome to attend any of these events by prior booking.

In the meantime, use our Club Calendar to find out when the next Training session will be.
